I grew up with an ordinary childhood, but I lived around the Caribbean in Panama, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Venezuela. When the family moved to the windward side of Martinique, the salty air and clear waters lit a fire for boats and life on the water.…. I learned to sail in the slim dugout “Carib canoes”, rigged with a spritsail and steered with an oar, and knew that I was hooked on boating.
A few more school years in landlocked Omaha, then competitive college sailing in New England, various school and job stints in Albuquerque, Ann Arbor and I eventually ended up in Maine, where the boating need could be adequately nourished.
I bought a beautiful old Casey cutter, and cruised her from southern New England waters up into the Bay of Fundy. I became manager in a full-service boatyard on Southport, ME, and got to know the ups and downs of the service and business sides of the boating world. My wife and I eventually ended up buying a “vintage” Grand Banks (42-072), cruising from Maine to the Abacos, up and down the ICW for five years. We were looking for some way to get away from cold Maine winters, and when a potential job offer loomed in Vero Beach, working with a Grand Banks dealer, we made the move. We had two small children, with whom we were going to “travel the world”…. Well, thirteen years later, we still live in Vero Beach, and those two small boys are now in high school and college!
I started selling Grand Banks in 1994 in Vero Beach, and joined Hal Jones and Co. in 2002. Iin the Fall of 2007, I continued as a broker associate with Classic Yachts International at the company’s Fort Pierce office. It is an honor to work with the level of quality in Grand Banks products, and it is a particular delight to get to know the kind of people who appreciate these fine yachts.
I never tire of going out on one of our boats, be it a new or a brokerage boat. I am a licensed USCG Master, power and sail up to 100 tons, so I like to keep my boathandling and seamanship skills well practiced. I enjoy running boats for pre-purchase surveys, doing delivery work for my clients and their families, and being along to witness the joy of getting out on the water on your own boat. Needless to say, I can be coerced into a “familiarization cruise”, particularly to the crystal waters of the Bahamas.
